Early 60's Ludwig Pre-Serial 'Super Ludwig' COB 400 Supraphonic 14x5"

Chrome over Brass shell, with COB hoops too! The dream. The famous crimped snare beds. Original round thumb screw damper.

These drums are the recipe for that hit record sound. No explanation. They are the Rolls Royce of snares. This drum is a fine example too. The expected scratches are there, but nothing major. I noticed one small dent on the panel right of the badge as you're looking at it. This is photographed.

Three lugs are newer than the rest. However they are not modern, they are 60's. I’m suspecting the majority are the WFL design style (from the circa '59 Transitional period) and the other three are the 60’s type that require slightly less metal, and the inserts are shorter on the inside. You can barely realise unless you line them up beside one another. See pic attached. As the drum is pre serial, thus being straight after the transitional era of WFL and Ludwig, I suspect they were using up old stock. The part number on the inside of all the lugs are the same, so it was just a change of era thing I suspect.

The bottom hoop has scratches, I’m thinking from an old snare stand that didn’t have rubber protectors.

Freshly stripped, cleaned and fitted with brand new Remo heads and Puresound wires. Ready to be rocked.
