Late 1960s Ludwig Standard No. S-102 14x5” Aluminium (#15332)

Date stamped: Mar 21 1969.

Serial number: 15332

Aluminium spun shell, à la 60s Acrolite but without the centre bead.

With original P83 script strainer, internal dampener, butt end, lugs, tension rods and hoops.

In the late 60s, the Ludwig Standard range was launched to compete with budget level Japanese ranges of the time. The two metal snare drum options in the Standard range were an aluminium 14x5" with chrome plating or with 'Acrolite' finish. This is essentially the same shell as the 60s Acrolites but without the centre bead - some would say, without the bead it gives it more of a focused sound.

This is a nice shining example, but does have some minor scuffs, aging and scratches as expected for a drum of this age.

See all photos for condition.

You can view a great video from Carter McLean playing one of these snares here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPSI6osuync

Catalog scan from 1968.

Freshly stripped, cleaned and polished in my workshop, August 2023.

Fitted with new (but slightly marked) Evans Power Center Reverse Dot batter, with slightly used Evans snare side 300 and Pearl wires.
