June 1947 Ludwig & Ludwig ‘Standard’ 14x5.5” in White Marine Pearl
June 1947 Ludwig & Ludwig ‘Standard’ 14x5.5” in White Marine Pearl
3-ply shell - maple/poplar/maple shell with maple reinforcing rings, white coated interior and original White Marine Pearl finish that has mellowed/yellowed wonderfully.
8 lug design.
The shell was faintly date stamped ‘4706’ - meaning June 1947. annoyingly this smudged off as I cleaned the drum up, see the last photo to see the drum before I cleaned it up - you’ll see the date stamp.
All original nickel over brass hardware including internal dampener, imperial lugs, double flange hoops and a lovely 'Standard Extention' strainer.
Not only does the 'Ludwig & Ludwig' on the badge show one of the many transitions of Ludwig, the 'Elkhart, Ind.' on the badge is also very fascinating, given that's where Leedy were from.
The snare wire extension plates underneath the butt end and strainer were originally used for longer snare wires that would go across the whole width of the bottom skin. For using modern wires, I bypass the extension plates for a much better fit and performance.
This is a lovely crisp and warm drum that performs delightfully. It would be a wonderful recording snare and really looks as great as it sounds.
A previous owner has re-glued the reinforcing rings, hence the excess glue showing.
The drum and hardware is in really great shape, especially considering its age.
See photos for condition.
Stripped, cleaned and polished in my workshop.
Fitted with brand new Remo Coated Ambassador, Ambassador Hazy heads and brand new Puresound Concert snare wires.
